Karamani Payiru (Small Red Beans) Sundal


Karamani Payiru (Red Beans) - 1 cup
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Urad dal - 1 tsp
  • Dry Red Chillies- 2 or 3
  • Grated Coconut - 1/4 cup
  • Few Curry Leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Asafoetida - a pinch


1. Clean the Beans and soak in water overnight.
2. Drain the water and cook the beans  in a pressure cooker for 2-3 whistles and turn off the flame.
3. In a skillet, heat  2 tsp of oil,  add the mustard seeds, Urad dal, red chillies and then the curry leaves.
4. Add the cooked  beans and Salt. Mix well.
5. Now add  grated coconut and asafoetida to the beans and turn off the flame. Gently stir until the coconut is well mixed.
6. Serve Warm.
